Why My Father Is My Ultimate Historical Figure

If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?

People usually answer this question with names like Gandhi, Einstein, or some ancient philosopher. I get it. Those are incredible minds, people who shaped the world in ways we still feel today.

But if I’m being completely honest? My answer is different.

I’d choose my father.

My Personal Historical Figure

I know that might seem like I’m bending the rules of the question. But here’s the thing: history isn’t just about famous people who changed nations. It’s also about the people who changed us. The ones who shaped our personal story, taught us how to navigate the world, and gave us the foundation for everything we’d become.

For me, that person was and always will be my father.

The Man Who Gave Me Everything

I was only brought into this world because of my parents. That’s where it all started. But it wasn’t just about being born; it was about everything that came after.

My father taught me how to ride a bicycle. I can still remember his hands on the back of the seat, steady and sure, telling me I could do it even when I was terrified of falling. And when I did fall, he was there to pick me up and say, “Again. You’ll get it.”

He taught me how to read and write. Those simple, foundational skills opened up the entire world to me: books, ideas, stories, knowledge, all because he sat with me and showed me how letters became words, and words became meaning.

He introduced me to so many things. Music. Food. Values. Hard work. Kindness. Integrity. The way he lived taught me how I wanted to live.

A Wonderful Life Because of Him

I can proudly say that I’ve lived a wonderful life, and that’s entirely because of him. Not because he gave me material things (though he provided everything we needed), but because he gave me himself. His time. His wisdom. His presence.

He was my first teacher and my best friend. The rock I could lean on, the voice of reason when I was lost, and the person who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.

My father wasn’t perfect; no one is. But he was real. He showed up. He cared. He loved us without conditions. And that’s a legacy more valuable than anything you could measure.

If I Could Meet Him Again

If given the chance, I would love to meet him again and again until my last breath.

I’d want to tell him thank you, truly, deeply, from the core of who I am. Thank you for the sacrifices. Thank you for the lessons. Thank you for being the kind of father who made me feel safe, loved, and capable of anything.

I’d want to ask him questions I never thought to ask when I had the time. About his dreams, his struggles, his fears. About what it felt like to raise a family and carry that responsibility with so much grace.

I’d want to sit with him over coffee, maybe at The Daily Brew Cafe one day, and just talk. About life, about what I’m building, about the person I’m trying to become. Because even now, when I face big decisions or uncertain moments, I think: What would he do? What would he say?

He Is My Hero

My father is my favorite personal historical figure. Not because he changed the world in a grand, public way, but because he changed my world completely.

He is the reason I value hard work, kindness, and showing up for the people you love. He is the reason I believe in building something meaningful, even when it’s hard. He is the reason I know what unconditional love looks like.

And if that’s not the definition of a hero, I don’t know what is.

To All the Fathers Out There

If your father is still with you, tell him. Tell him what he means to you. Ask him the questions. Sit with him over coffee. Don’t wait.

And if, like me, he’s no longer here, carry him forward. Live in a way that honors what he gave you. Build something that reflects the values he taught you. Love the way he loved.

Because the best way to meet them again and again is to keep their legacy alive in everything we do.

Your turn

Who is your personal historical figure, the person who shaped your life like no one else?

I’d be honoured to hear their story
