Overcome Self-Sabotage in Your Café Journey

Reading regularly exposes us to new ideas, stories and strategies we can adapt to our own cafe journey, from branding and guest experience to leadership and team culture. This mental cross-training helps us see the cafe as a living, evolving story in which we and our guests grow together.

Books also slow us down enough to think deeply. That reflective space is where we clarify our “why,” refine the concept and find the courage to keep going when plans get delayed or challenges hit. Over time, our decisions become more thoughtful, our ideas more original and our vision more resilient. Here’s the reading list shaping the dream right now.

1. The Mountain Is You (Brianna Wiest)

The Mountain Is You focuses on understanding and transforming self-sabotaging patterns so we can stop getting in our own way. For a cafe dreamer, that means facing fears about failure, money, judgment or comparison, and turning them into fuel for growth.

The book teaches us to see obstacles as our personal “mountain,” the thing that shapes us into a stronger, clearer and more grounded version of ourselves. That inner work shows up in how we handle setbacks like delays, slow days or creative blocks. (I wrote more about it in The Mountain In Front of Us.)

2. Kaizen (Sarah Harvey)

Kaizen introduces the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement through small, consistent steps. Instead of trying to perfect the cafe vision overnight, Kaizen encourages micro-improvements: one better blog post, one refined menu idea, one smoother guest experience at a time.

This mindset suits our Japanese-inspired aesthetic, which is calm, intentional and detail-focused. It helps us stay patient and committed, and it keeps overwhelm in check while the dream moves forward every day.

3. Good to Great (Jim Collins)

Good to Great explores why some companies stay average while others become exceptional, focusing on discipline, clarity and the right people in the right roles. For a cafe, that translates into choosing quality over shortcuts, building a strong culture and designing systems that make excellence routine rather than accidental.

Reading it pushes us to see The Daily Brew Cafe not just as a cozy spot, but as a brand that could consistently deliver a standout experience. It nudges us to aim higher on service, storytelling and long-term impact.

4. Leaders Eat Last (Simon Sinek)

Leaders Eat Last looks at how great leaders create safe, trusting environments where people feel cared for and motivated. A cafe is a people-first space. The team and the guests both do well when they feel seen, respected and protected.

The book’s ideas shape how we’d want to treat a future team, the culture behind the counter and how we show up as founders. That kind of leadership leads to warmer service, happier people and a cafe that feels like home to everyone in it.

5. Start with Why (Simon Sinek)

Start With Why is about defining the deeper purpose behind what we do, beyond making money. For a cafe, the “why” might be storytelling, community, travelers, calm spaces or creative coffee, and this book helps you put it into words.

When we know our “why,” everything from branding and menu ideas to interiors, blog posts and collaborations feels more aligned. It also makes our story clearer online, because people respond to a consistent, purpose-driven message.
