Women in Coffee: Breaking Barriers in the Industry

Behind every exceptional cup of coffee is a story of strength and determination. Women have always been the backbone of coffee production—and today, they’re stepping into the spotlight and transforming the industry from farm to cup.

The Hidden Truth About Coffee Production

Here’s something most coffee lovers don’t know: according to the International Coffee Organization, women provide up to 70% of the labour in coffee production, depending on the region. They plant, harvest, and process the beans that fuel our mornings. Yet only 20-30% of coffee farms are run by women.

This gap shows the reality—women do most of the work but have little control over land, income, or business decisions.

Pioneers Who Changed the Game

Several trailblazing women have reshaped coffee culture through determination and vision.

Erna Knutsen revolutionized the industry in the 1970s by creating the concept of “specialty coffee.” Despite facing discrimination and even being banned from tasting rooms, she persisted and founded her own company. Today, the specialty coffee movement she started has transformed how we experience coffee.

In India, Namrata Asthana co-founded Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters in 2013, bringing high-quality specialty coffee to Indian consumers and inspiring a new generation of coffee enthusiasts.

Real Stories from Coffee Farms

Ana Maria Donneys took over six family coffee farms in Colombia at age 26. Male workers refused to take her seriously at first. But she earned her Q Grader certification, improved quality, and when her coffee commanded higher prices, skeptics became believers.

In Nicaragua, Francisca transformed heartbreak into success. After her husband left, she was alone with three children and no income. Through tears, she planted her first coffee seedbed and made a promise: “I am not going to cry anymore. I am going to prove that I am a great coffee grower.” Today, she’s a respected farmer in her community.

“Behind every exceptional cup stands a woman who refused to remain invisible—planting seeds of change, harvesting equality, and brewing a better future.”

Organizations Creating Change

Programs like Café Femenino work exclusively with female coffee growers, giving them land ownership, income control, and training to improve their farms. These initiatives don’t just improve coffee quality—they break poverty cycles and give women economic independence.

The Business Side Still Needs Work

Women make up a large share of the people behind café counters, yet they remain underrepresented in business ownership and management. Female coffee entrepreneurs are working to change this by creating more equitable systems throughout the supply chain.

How You Can Support Women in Coffee

When you buy coffee from women-led initiatives or female-owned businesses, you’re investing in:

  • Education and healthcare for farming communities
  • Economic independence for women and their families
  • Breaking generational cycles of poverty
  • Creating opportunities at every industry level

Your Cup Makes a Difference

The next time you enjoy your morning coffee, remember the hands that cultivated those beans. There’s a good chance a woman planted, picked, and processed that coffee—perhaps overcoming significant barriers to do so.

By choosing to support women in coffee, you become part of a movement creating real change in one of the world’s most beloved industries.
