Curious about sipping black coffee before breakfast? Here’s why your empty stomach might love (or dislike) your morning brew.
The Upside
Black coffee before food can:
- Give your metabolism a small, temporary lift thanks to caffeine
- Boost energy and alertness for a productive morning
- Sharpen attention and lift your mood
- Get your digestion moving (many people find it helps them stay regular)
- Deliver antioxidants, the plant compounds that help protect your cells
No milk and no sugar also means close to zero calories, which is part of why black coffee is so popular as a first thing in the morning.

The Downside
For some people, black coffee without food brings on acidity, stomach discomfort or a jittery, anxious feeling, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine or prone to acid reflux. If that sounds like you, have it with or after breakfast instead. I went into this in more detail in the risks of drinking coffee on an empty stomach.
Moderation and timing matter more than anything else. A cup or two in the morning suits most people. And if you want to make your black coffee taste better, not just stronger, Brew Buddy in the sidebar will work out the right ratio for your brewer.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you’re pregnant, have a heart condition or are sensitive to caffeine, check with your doctor about what’s right for you.
